The Thimbles have often been described as a piece of the Maine coast that drifted into Long Island Sound. Summer excursion vessels plied these waters during the "golden age" of the Victorian Era. Twenty-three of the islands are large enough to be inhabited.
Approximately 85 homes, built mostly during the Victorian Era, are complete with widow walks, gingerbread trimmings, and genteel gazebos. Islands range in all sizes, and have spartina and pink granite with the larger ones boasting scrub pine & hardwoods, making the islands appear to be deceivingly tropical in nature!
